A welding helmet is a type of personal protective equipment (PPE) normally powered by solar cells and lithium battery, which is worn by welders to shield their face, eyes, and neck from sparks, heat, and harmful ultraviolet and infrared radiation emitted during the welding process. Welding helmets or welding hoods can especially protect eyes against damage and burns while working.

The structure of the welding helmet

A welding helmet consists of a shell, an arc welding goggle, and a headgear. The hard outer shell is in the shape of a shield that encloses the whole face with a goggle on it. The goggle is a crucial part of the welding helmet as it protects the users’ eyes and faces during welding. In addition, some welding helmets like the auto darkening welding helmet are also equipped with a lens, which can automatically darken to reduce eye fatigue and damage when strong radiation exposure is detected. As for the headgear, it enables the helmet to fix on head stably with its adjustable straps.

The material of the welding helmet

Welding hat is typically made of a combination of thermoplastic material, fiberglass, and polycarbonate because such materials have characteristics of heat resistance, impact resistance, light transmission, UV protection, and corrosion resistance. These materials have high optical density and heat resistance, which can effectively block the penetration of strong light. Technically, the goggles for welding masks are usually covered with a special laser shielding coating that can absorb or reflect strong light such as lasers, reducing its damage to the eyes. Even with the existence of this special protective coat, the goggles must reach a certain standard of transparency, so that the welder can still see clearly and it won’t influence the user’s operation.
