About products and suppliers

Even with the rise in advanced wireless technology, such as high-speed gigabit Wi-Fi and MIMO radios, the humble telephone wire continues to serve as the backbone of the Internet. Advanced technology such as fiber-optic cables only serves to enhance and entrench the telephone cable as the foundation on which the Internet is built.

What is a telephone cable?

A telephone cable, also commonly known as a phone cord, phone wire, or phone cable, is a piece of wire used to connect a phone or computer to a modem, then to an outdoor telephone line provided by an Internet service provider, then finally, to another phone, CPU, or server. Phone cables have been in use ever since the telephone was widely adopted, and even in this age of wireless technology like Wi-Fi, wired infrastructure still serves as the backbone of the Internet. A high-speed Internet connection is currently achievable via phone wires, and this supposedly old technology is unaffected by adverse atmospheric conditions - factors that easily throw off wireless radio connections.

What are some examples and types of telephone cables?

The types of telephone cables depend largely on which part of the network they are used for. Cables for indoor applications include Ethernet to phone and phone line to Ethernet cables, a mature standard used since the days of dial-up Internet. These wires are used to convert phone signals to Ethernet signals to the modem, which can then be used by routers, smartphones, laptops, and other devices. Outdoor telephone wires, on the other hand, include aerial telephone cables and underground telephone cables. Aerial cables are used to connect a modem to an aerial, otherwise known as an antenna, so that a modem or phone can receive data wirelessly through satellite signals or broadcasted media. Underground cables are buried directly onto the ground. These wires carry high-speed Internet via fiber-optic cable technology and need to be extra resilient against ground moisture, accidental digging, and other hostile scenarios. This particular type of technology is much preferred in upscale, exclusive addresses and urban city centers as they decrease visual clutter significantly.
