What is a rubber washer and what are the different types?

A rubber washer is a small ring that is made of rubber. They are usually circular in shape with a hole in the center. A thread faster is placed into the hole. The rubber washer is placed under the head of a bolt or nut and screwed in with it. There can be many different types of rubber washers. Many different sizes are available, from very large to tiny. The hole in the center can be many different sizes to accommodate bolts and nuts of different sizes. Rubber washers are also available in many different materials. These include neoprene washers, EPDM washers, and silicone washers. Depending on the size and material, a rubber washer could be used for the connections on many different types of objects. Examples include garden hose washers, rubber hose washers, faucet rubber washers, and shower head rubber washers.

What is a rubber washer used for?

Rubber washers are primarily used to reduce the noise and vibration of moving parts. The rubber material acts as an insulator for the connection, dampening the movement of the vibration and, therefore, the noise it makes. The size and thickness of the rubber washer heavily influence how well it dampens sound and vibrations. Thick rubber washers would be able to reduce vibrations much better than thin ones. Rubber washers have other uses, as well. For example, washer rubber seals might be used to waterproof a connection. The rubber in some rubber washers acts to keep water from escaping.

Why are rubber washers important?

Washers are important because they are used to help distribute the load of a threaded fastener. Without washers and gaskets, the connection would be weaker and more prone to breaking. Rubber washers can also prevent water leaks, protecting important components that should not get wet, such as computer parts.
