The transport industry is evolving at an alarming rate, and the need for specialized trailers, such as insulated cargo trailers, is increasing rapidly. An insulated trailer is an unpowered cargo container designed to transport temperature-sensitive goods through a logistic system known as a cold chain. To insulate cargo trailers and keep the internal temperature at a constant range, they are made with thermal-stable materials. If, by any chance, the interior temperature fluctuates, some cargo trailers are equipped with air conditioners to trap and remove heat. These insulated cargo trailer with AC are reliable for transporting frozen goods.

How does an insulated cargo trailer work?

An insulated cargo trailer works in two ways. In the first way, the trailer is made using insulated materials such as fiberglass, spray foam, or polyurethane foam. These thermal resistance materials are sprayed or installed on the trailer's walls, ceiling and floor. Their main purpose is to keep the temperature of goods in transit within an acceptable range. Unfortunately, if a customer buys an insulated cargo trailer with windows, it will not be able to maintain the internal temperature at a constant range over a long distance. This is because heat escaping from the engine and surrounding environment will cause the cargo to heat up. Thus, this cargo trailer is not suitable for extremely temperature-sensitive goods like fresh meat and dairy products.

In the second way, the cargo trailer is equipped with air conditioners (ACs). An AC unit has a thermostat, refrigerant, compressors, coils and motor. To work, a thermostat detects temperature fluctuations and switches on the AC's fans. As they rotate, they push warm air through the copper coils filled with a refrigerant. As the air passes through the coils, refrigerant traps heat. This cools the air, and the process repeats for several hours until the temperature inside the cargo trailer drops. AC insulated cargo trailers for sale are usually versatile and reliable; they can work with a wide range of goods and over different environmental conditions.

What are the common types of insulation materials used in insulated cargo trailers?

Cargo trailer insulation use various types of insulation materials to provide thermal protection and maintain stable temperatures. The choice of insulation material depends on factors such as the desired level of insulation, cost, weight, and specific requirements of the cargo being transported. Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) is a lightweight and cost-effective insulation material. It consists of rigid foam panels that provide good thermal resistance and insulation properties. EPS is commonly used in cargo trailers due to its affordability and ease of installation. Extruded Polystyrene (XPS) is another type of rigid foam insulation that offers high thermal resistance. It has a closed-cell structure that makes it resistant to moisture absorption, making it suitable for applications where moisture control is important. XPS is relatively more expensive than EPS but provides better insulation performance. Also a synthetic plastic, polyurethane (PU) foam is a versatile insulation material known for its excellent thermal insulation capabilities. It provides a high level of insulation efficiency and can be sprayed or injected into the trailer walls to create a seamless and airtight barrier. PU foam offers superior thermal performance but may be more expensive than EPS or XPS.

What is the cargo capacity of an insulated trailer?

The cargo capacity of many insulated trailers varies according to the size of the trailer. For example, the cargo capacity of a 7x12 insulated cargo trailer is between 3000 and 4000 pounds. Other factors affecting cargo capacity are the type of goods. Some products, like meat, have a high density, meaning a trailer will carry more weight while using less volume. Butter, on the other hand, has low density. It occupies more space at the expense of weight.
